On April 14, Doug Sorenson received the following email from Lea Johnston: I'm back! Been out of circulation for a spell! February 15th had a "stroke"; hospital and rehab for 38 days and in home rehab now for a longer spell. Wheelchair bound.

My total health package is Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy; arthritis; the ramifications from the stroke; and the potential of developing a DVT in my left leg; all exacerbating each other. Other than this all is in fine fettle. Not too bad for a 78 year old!

Cards may be sent to: Lea Johnston, 11 Locust Ct., Narragansett, RI 02882

Sorry all these things are happening to you, Lea. Wishing you the best! Bev

Sorry this blog is sadly out of date. I had back surgery in September following a painful two months and have been slowly recuperating, but the prognosis is good.

Again, we have lost a few more classmates: Virginia Crowell Hordusky died August
23, 2011 following an extended illness. Ginny worked as a cake decorator for Super Duper for 20 years and if you ever attended a birthday or graduation party in Erie, no doubt you sampled one of her creations. Condolences may be sent to George and her family at 5525 Martin Road, Erie, PA 16509.

Although we have no information, we have learned that Francine Maloney Scott passed away earlier this year.

Carolyn Babcock, sister of Betty Babcock Huffman, died October 5, 2011. Condolences can be sent to Betty at 14333 Stewart Road, Corry, PA 16407.

We recently heard from Elaine Rossin Roth. She sends her condolences and regards to class members. She says she has fond memories of our high school days in Corry. She also reminded me that I neglected to mention the passing of Minna Stahl on November 10, 2010. Minna was our Spanish teacher. She was also quite a character and I have fond memories of her.

At our class picnic in September, we passed the hat and collected $245 towards our upcoming 60th (WOW!!!) class reunion. The class treasury now contains $535 and the scholarship fund contains $2800. We hope to award one more scholarship in the amount of $3,000 at the reunion.

Recently received a communique from Jacki Lanphere telling us that she has sold her home in Madison, Alabama and is now pursuing the "sensible" course of condominium living. Her new address is: 1052 Cathedral Circle, Madison Alabama 35758. Telephone: 256-772-7626 Email: jiglan@att.net

Sadly we lost two classmates in June, 2011.

Clara "Corkee" Parker Briggs died June 6 after a brief battle with leukemia. She was one of our roller skaters. She enjoyed making ceramics and loved to crochet. One of her crocheting accomplishments was the creation of her daughter's wedding dress.
Condolences may be sent to Corkee's family at 304 E. Elmwood Ave., Falconer, NY 14733

Sidney "Sid" Smith lost his battle with brain cancer on June 27. He was married to fellow classmate, Shirley Anderson Smith, who died April 22, 2010. Sid liked to ride his bike and he and Shirley enjoyed square dancing. Condolences may be sent to Sid's family at his home address: 2075 Bradley Drive, St.Cloud, FL 34771-8689

Sadly, Jim Hannan lost his battle with cancer and passed away at home on Sunday, February 28. Calling hours are Saturday, March 5 at 10:00 AM followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas Church in Corry, PA. Condolences may be sent to Joan at 1112 Gamma Road, Corry, PA 16407.

Jim was a tireless worker for the Class of 1953 Reunion Committee. Many events and annual picnics came about through the results of his efforts. We owe him much gratitude for the success of these endeavors. The committee will miss him greatly.

Jim was also member of the Scholarship Committee. A scholarship in the amount of $3500 was awarded at our 55th reunion in 2008 and we hope to award another scholarship in the amount of $2000 or more at our 60th reunion in 2013. With this in mind, we are making a donation from the class treasury in Jim's name. Should you wish to make your own donation in Jim's name, checks may be made to the Class of 1953 and sent to Beverly Tripp, Class Treasurer, PO Box 93, Clymer, NY 14724.

Again, we have lost another classmate. Doris Lillie Lilley of 7429 Allenhurst Ave., Ridgway, PA 15853 passed away May 21, 2009 just a few days short of her 74th birthday. She is survived by her husband, Jim, a son, a daughter and four grandchildren. Many of you may remember her mother, Elnora, a well-known Corry musician. She used to entertain many of Doris' friends with sing-a-longs after which we would all head to the REX Theatre for the Friday night scary movie. We have recently learned that Rhae Blatt Lloyd, sister of Bill Blatt (102 Vine Ave., Greenville, PA 16125) died last January.

This brings the balance to $4,162 which will enable us to meet our obligation to recipient Kari Swart of $1,500 for years 2009 and 2010. The balance in the fund will be invested with the goal of awarding an additional scholarship in 2011

To see pictures from the alumni banquet go to: www.velocity.net/~jesilvis and scroll down to the alumni posting. The class of 1958 (my sister's class) took home both cups this year. It was noted that this was the third time in the last 8 years that one class had won both cups - 1950, "1953" and 1958. Sure glad our class was one of them - hate to give my sister "bragging rights". Also forgot to mention in the previous post that Kari Swart was the winner of the scholarship. She received $1500 this year and will receive another $1500 for the next two years providing she maintains a GPA of 2.75.
There is a picture of Mary Ann Cassat-Dunn awarding the scholarship.

Our 55th class reunion is now behind us with moderate success. Because of various other commitments, bereavements, illnesses and outrageous travel costs, several members were unable to attend, but 28 of us answered the alumni dinner roll call.
Chuck and Pat Dominessy were on their way, but had to turn back from their daughter's home in Virginia when it was discovered that Chuck's incision from a recent surgery was badly infected. He received treatment in Florida and is now on the mend. Both Anna Hickey Hartman and Shirley Anderson Smith sent regrets saying this was the first reunion each would be missing. Anna's husband, Paul, was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer and is undergoing treatment for it. They are optimistic that it was caught in time and that Paul will recover fully. Shirley has to go to dialysis 3 times a week, therefore she is basically homebound. She mentions that she has a pacemaker, too. Says Sid does a great job as "Mr. Homemaker". And Becky Williams Arnink, too, sends greetings. She is recovering from minor surgery. Good luck and good health to you all. We also received regrets and fond wishes from Elaine Rossin Roth, Evelyn Davis Van Wingerden, Theresa Sperry Massa and Jack Raymond. Marilyn Ingram Seale sent a nice letter detailing life in post-Kartina Biloxi, MS and again thanking everyone for the most welcome donation. Lea Johnston, too sent us a long letter including a poem parody of September Song comparing it to our 55th.

CONDOLENCES TO THE FOLLOWING CLASSMATES ON THEIR RECENT BEREAVEMENTS:

We received the following email from Jacki Lanphere (Lloyd's wife) on Friday, July 27, 2007:

This is a short note to tell you that my husband, Lloyd, passed on this afternoon. He was very ill with congestive heart failure and aspirating pneumonia with other complications. He was just 72 on April 28th and his failing health started the middle of May
when he suffered a very bad stroke. His ability to speak and swallow were the big things affected. Through therapy he could walk without aid of any kind and dress himself, etc. Lloyd fought very hard to overcome this, but evidently the Good Lord felt he needed him more than anyone else does.

He lead a good life, and silently without "tooting his own horn" helped his fellow man. He wanted no kudos

or hurrahs, and he was what I call a "quiet" Christian. For me he was the "greatest".

I just tested it:

the one extra step that I can see is we will have to contribute to the master mailing list of Google so they can charge more $$$ for their ads. The first time you sign on they will make you jump thru some hoops to register with Google (just use the same names as you used with the old blogger). Google will confirm that you have added your name to their database and taken an oath that you will abide by all their rules.

They will send a confirming email to you, and a hot link to click to get back to the BeaverDam53 blog, then things look familiar, you write and post to the blog just like before.

I will be dispatching new invitations to everyone in the class of 53 that I have email addresses for. The rest will be up to you!

Sorry everyone, we got snarled in the world of corporate takeovers. There are a couple of hiccups involved to get back to using The Beaver Dam blog. I am using myself as the human sacrifice to try to follow the new instructions to sign on and add your comments that surely must have been building up all this time.

Everyone will be getting a new invitation and sign on instructions that will (hopefully) override the new rules.
I believe I can hack this thing to make your old sign on name and password reactivate.

We will see.

Lloyd has moved to a care/rehab facility and is doing well. He is still unable to talk or swallow normally but did swallow some ice creams yesterday (not his favorite food). He, with the use of a walker, walked between his room and rehab, to the astonishment of the staff. This va phone conversation with Jacki last evening.

Well, Hello!
Sorry I have been away so long. Had a little memory problem (lack of oxygen while on a heart-lung machine) and the change to Google further complicated things. Hope this gets to the outside, I have certainly missed being able to communicate.

Joe

The following is from Lea Johnston, if it makes it onto the blog, I "may" be able to instruct others who have been stuck:

Joe, Still not able to use the "Beaver Dam" and have passed the following information to Beverly Little but she has not put it on the "B D".

Would you please put it on? Lea

Lea. today Lloyd will finally be moved from ICU to "step down" (private regular room). He has a very weak heart, and he suffered a "big stroke," as well as slowly ebbing pneumonie. Also, he has some emphysema. The main problems though are the stroke and the heart. He still cannot talk, and his right side was effected by stroke, which hit 2/3 of the brain. I don't know what is going to happen from here on. However, rehab probably will take over. The physical therapist is working with him now.
Must go, as I must get myself ready to go to my truly wonderful husband, who has been my "Rock of Gibraltar" through much "thick and thin."

Cards for Lloyd may be sent to hospital or to their home. If they are sent to their home, Jacki will carry them to Lloyd. The hospital address is: Crestwood Hospital, One Hospital Drive, Huntsville, Alabama 35801. Room 317. Our address is 120 Bellingham Drive, Madison, Alabama 35758.

Just reporting that Mary Cassatt Dunn's husband has cancer. He has had surgery and treatments, but to no avail. They have given him a time frame which is too soon for anyone.

Having been there and done this myself, I am asking that you take time to send her a "Thinking of you" card. Unless you have experienced this delima you don't know how much cardes mean to a person..

To All Members of the Beaver Dam Blog:

I have recently received porno messages from someone who hacked our blog. Effective immediately I am activating a "member only" code that will appear at the end of your posts. As always, anyone will be able to read the posts on the blog and classmates who have responded to the invitation will continue to be able to post. The security code will stop unauthorized posts from non-class members. It will be a simple 5 digit code, similar to what is seen when you send an email on yahoo. The 5 digit security code will prevent auto spamming by a machine because it must be responded to by repeating the code in the window. This is too much trouble for a hacker, and we should be able to message in peace.

They evacuated to Georgia, but are now back in Biloxi living in a FEMA trailer and trying to get their lives back together. Marilyn is very touched by and grateful for our support. Her address is:

Hello Group:
As most of you, I have not signed on to the BeaverDam53 blog in quite some time. Please be assured that it is not because of lack of interest. I guess I have just been focusing on my house remodeling project (a simple 2 week task that stretched into 15 months as I discovered more problems at each stage and the thing just sort of grew. We (mini-schnauzers: Gus, DJ, Todo, Parker and Solomon and myself) are doing fine, judging by the growth of our waistlines. I expect to have more time to read and respond to your blog comments as I recover from heart surgery next week. They (the 3 heart doctors) say I need a quadruple bypass. I am assuming that is because splitting the fee 3 ways is not enough to make payments on their condos in Hawaii. Anyhow, except for creating passwords to add new classmates, the blog is in good shape to run itself; you all can either post an original message, or comment on someone else's posting. See you on the flip side.

Congratulations are in order for Lea Johnston who has produced another book of poems. This one, "Blossoms of the Mind" is available at amazon.com or authorhouse.com, or your favorite local bookstore (you may have to special order it if the bookstore didn't anticipate demand). In his latest effort, Lea has thoughfully included an introduction with each poem and accompanying spectacular photograph. "Blossoms of the Mind" is not the type of book you pick up and read from cover to cover in one sitting; rather, it is like a fine wine, best with a pause between each poem while you take time to ponder the bouquet and the special after taste.

I was honored to receive Lea's autobiographical "Pictures and Poems" of a Poet, and mistakenly thought that would be his life's crowning glory. Not so. Keep them coming Lea.

The Pomeranian is food possessive and the cats are in various stages of trauma and hostility. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving today. Will be on again soon. I HOPE!!!!

The following was received from Sally Dickinson, I don't fault her for forgetting about the blog while on a great vacation. Sally, if you have some photos of you visiting the various places on your trip, I am sure many of us would enjoy them. Anyhow, welcome back!

Dear Family and Friends: We are back from our trip to Jordan, and what a trip it was. We have never been in the company of such friendly and caring people, nor have we ever stayed at more lavish hotels (you know the kind that a waiter puts your napkin on your lap, and then after you have eaten they bring finger bowls with either a slice of lemon in warm water, or warm rose water). We thought that their five star hotels might be more like our three star. Not the case in Jordan. We thank you for your prayers while we were gone. Now we need to get acclimated with the change in time of seven hours.
Sally

Hi Joe and Bev,As for the status of our place in St. Petersburg, we seem to have not had any trouble at this point. We feel very blessed in that Frances was to have hit directly in the Tampa Bay area and then she turned far enough into the Gulf and missed us. We do have friends in Punta Gorda who had major damage to their house, and for them and all the others we feel very bad. It certainly has been some hurricane season and it isn't over yet. Thanks for asking about us all.

With all of the members of Class of 1953 who have dual residences in the north and south, I am surprised that there has not been one mention of the welfare of those who may have had homes in the paths of the 2 (and soon to be 3) hurricanes that have wreaked havoc in Florida and a few adjoining states. Did they all get lucky? Or, is it just that no one cares as long as it didn't happen to them? At least volunteers from Texas and some Texas money has been pouring into the damaged area since soon after the storms hit.

It has all of the signatures of the class members that were at the 50th reunion plus all of the deceased members on the back. With the old High School in the center. Mary Ann and her sister delivered it to Betty on August 18th.
It is a very unique piece of History.

Congratulations, Joe!

It was nice to see some photos on the blog; I'm sure more will come now.

We haven't heard yet of anyone in our class who was affected by Hurricane Charley. Our place in St. Petersburg was in jeopardy in the beginning, but thankfully nothing happened there. We feel so badly for those who were caught unaware in Punta Gorda and Orlando. My husband has classmates in both places and they had damage, but did not lose their property totally. The season isn't over yet and we, here in North Carolina, are very aware of that.
